Clean Up Kinshasa is an initiative to pool the efforts of all stakeholders to address the health and environmental emergency of sanitation in the city of Kinshasa through economically viable and sustainable solutions.

It was born from the commitment of the Embassy of the Netherlands and the UN Global Compact, expressed during the Clean Up Day in September 2024, in favor of mobilizing the private sector to support the Governor of Kinshasa, Mr. Daniel Bumba Lubaki, in the implementation of his urban sanitation policy. This involves setting up an integrated system for the management and treatment of urban waste, ranging from collection to recovery in the form of energy, fertilizers, or eco-friendly paving stones.

City Hall of Kinshasa

The City Hall of Kinshasa plays a strategic role in coordinating sanitation policies, catalyzing links between institutions, municipalities, technical partners, and the private sector. Its ability to guide territorial planning and ensure regulatory coherence makes it a major player in sustainable transformation. Through the provincial program 'Kin Ezo Bonga,' Governor Daniel Lumba Lubaki positions sanitation as a driver of growth and employment for Kinshasa. He officially launched the Clean Up Kinshasa Initiative in April 2025.

“Clean Up Kinshasa is not an isolated action. It is part of the 2024–2028 Action Program of the provincial government 'Kin Ezo Bonga.' This program aligns with the six commitments and the three priority initiatives of the Head of State, among which sanitation of our cities is explicitly included. Kinshasa, the capital of the Republic, must be the showcase of this transformation.”

His Excellency, the Governor of Kinshasa, Daniel Bumba Lubaki.

Embassy of the Netherlands

The Embassy of the Netherlands in the DRC plays a key role in urban sanitation thanks to its expertise in sustainable waste management. Each year, it organizes the Cleanup Day with the UN Global Compact DRC and the city of Kinshasa. Under the leadership of Ambassador Angèle Samura, it launched a sanitation assessment that led to the Clean Up Kinshasa Initiative. The Embassy promotes a vision where sanitation becomes a driver of economic development through recycling, green jobs, and waste recovery.

“The 'Clean Up Kinshasa' initiative is ambitious and achievable, representing a collective effort. The Kingdom of the Netherlands has proven added value in the field of waste recovery and will mobilize the expertise and experience of its private sector for the benefit of the city. This initiative represents a real opportunity for everyone to take part in a large-scale project and serves as a lever to strengthen economic growth and the attractiveness of the city.”

The UN Global Compact Network DRC represents the Congolese branch of the United Nations global initiative to promote corporate social responsibility. In the field of sanitation, it catalyzes private sector engagement around the Sustainable Development Goals. Its support for the Clean Up Kinshasa Initiative illustrates its ability to bring stakeholders together around an integrated approach: governance, waste recovery, and professionalization of the sector. It acts as a driver of transformation by aligning business practices with the country’s environmental and social challenges.

“Like you, we believe it is time to move from a reactive approach to one of transformation. Kinshasa faces a huge challenge. Yet this same challenge carries enormous potential. That is why this initiative aims to make sanitation a true driver of green growth, social cohesion, and the creation of sustainable jobs. This project is not a miracle solution, but the first step in a process of profound and lasting transformation. It will not succeed without collective mobilization and synergy among all stakeholders.”
